According to the church and to what is considered as the moral society, marriage is an institution that is supposed to work for as long as the partners involved are alive. In fact, according to the bible, marriage is meant to work until death separates the two partners. However, the reality in the contemporary world shows that the institution of marriage has failed to work because people no longer get along together for a longer period. In the current world, many people pick their marriage partners without the full conviction that they want to settle. Besides, they do not take time to understand their partners nor themselves. Many people marry for wrong reasons. Some people are propelled by their loneliness, some because of pregnancies while others marry because of pressure from their peers.
Such people who marry for wrong reasons end up messing up their lives because they realize in their later years that they wanted a different kind of life or even partners. So then, what is the sense of marriage if partners are supposed to stay together till death do them apart regardless of whether they are happy or not? Anybody would want to disagree with this since marriage should bring happiness and in a case where the partners are not happy, then it loses meaning. On the other side of the argument, however, one may try to reason that marriage as an institution has not failed and is, in fact, working for those people who are dedicated to it.

Marriage has not brought the challenges that are faced by most people in marriages as an institution but rather by the society and the change of cultures in the modern world. People no longer understand things the way they were long ago. It is time marriage is redefined, for people to be real with themselves and go for what they want after thorough self-examination. The arguer here wants us to believe that marriage is what one makes of it and that it is the responsibility of the partners involved to invest in it.
