Myths

The US is a Fundamentally Classless Society

There are several myths that the people of the United States believe to be true. One of the myths is that the United States is a fundamentally classless society. Many American people believe that their society is classless in that no single individual is born to any social class. This statement, however, is not true since there are social classes in this country. In American society there is clear evidence from the quality and opportunity of the resources available for them; for example, education is usually based on social and economic class. Also from the way people live in the United States, the poor and the rich do not stay in the same place which clearly depicts the difference in social class. It is essential to change the perception created by this myth because it affects the distribution of economic resources and opportunities especially to Americans of low economic status.

Everyone has an Equal Chance to Succeed

Many Americans believe that this myth is true since the law provides for equal opportunity among the American population where there is no longer a system of inheritance of titles of nobility rather the sovereignty of people is upheld. The truth is some individuals are born with an advantage over others. The perfect example to explain this myth is comparing two youths; one of them is a son of a billionaire while the other is a son of a peasant and they leave in the remote area of the country. The son of a billionaire is being prepared to take over the business while the other son of a peasant may never get proper education leave alone an opportunity to be successful. This comparison clearly shows that the two don't have an equal chance of succeeding.

Another example is the treatment that the people of color get. Some people may get rejected, or their job applications turned down because of their race confirming that not everyone has equal chances in life. This statement should be made a reality so that the gap between the poor and the rich gets reduced.

Wealth and Household Pressures

Importance of wealth and privileges of class

Wealth is essential because it aids in the further understanding of social inequality. It illuminates the differences in wealth based on factors such as gender or racial disparities. Wealth is also crucial since it ensures the security of resources such as healthcare, education, job opportunities among others. This security allows wealthy people to live comfortably and the chance to pursue more wealth.

Privileges provide by class

Both economic and social classes are some of the ways to understand class privilege. The types of privileges that get provided by the social class include participation in different activities, access to opportunities and easily opening specific educational doors. On opening particular educational doors, the class gives some individuals a privilege to attend some schools that other people may never be able to pay for. The class also gives individuals the privilege to access specific opportunities like camping during the summer. Additionally class gives the American citizen a privilege to undertake certain activities like becoming club members.

Pressures Faced by American Households

The pressures that the American individuals face include Leisure time, debt/savings, retirement, temporary jobs, and health care. The American citizens are each day getting into a hole in terms of debt. The personal debt excluding the mortgage is increasing at an alarming rate. The increase of the debt has led to the low saving level of the American people. Also, temporary jobs weigh down on the American job seekers which make it hard for sustainability. Another pressure faced by American households is healthcare inequality. Several households cannot afford primary healthcare. The policies put in place are not good; hence several American citizens miss out on the essential medical care.
