Issue Summary

The issue considered relates to the idea that over the years, mentally ill inmates have not been provided with equal opportunity to receive care from medical professionals. According to Gonzales and Papadopoulos (2010), the failure to provide the mentally ill inmates with the medical care they deserve creates a significant health disparity.

Relevant Background Information

It is difficult for mentally ill patients to access resources that would ensure that their care needs are met. In this regard, Szabo (2017) argues that it would not be fair to include mentally ill patients with the general population in jail. This provision calls for the need to treat mentally ill patients with dignity and respect. For this reason, it would be vital to set up a mechanism through which competent healthcare professionals could take care of the needs of the mentally ill inmates.

Alternative Recommendation Analysis

Setting apart resources for the development of a mental health correction facility will assist in ensuring that the mentally ill patients serve their time while being rehabilitated and receiving treatment from professionals. Conversely, educating the families of the mentally ill inmates, which is essential for keeping them accountable for the care of their patients. This recommendation considers the inclusion of the family as essential for ensuring that the patients feel respected. As a result, it would be possible to build a trusting relationship with the patients, which will ensure that they comply with the treatment provisions ( Social Solutions, 2017) .

Action Required

Among the considered actions is the idea that it would be vital to separate the mentally ill patients from the general population in jail through the development of a mental health correctional facility. Conversely, the mentally ill inmates have the right to feel respected, which calls for the inclusion of their families while they receive care once they are stable. One of the positive consequences of the inclusion is the idea that it would build trust, which is a provision that might ensure the compliance of the patients while receiving care from the professionals (Landsberg, 2002). On the other hand, the provision will ensure the reduction of healthcare provision disparities.
