In terms of the job description, the crew leader's primary function is to manage a team, such as servers, cooks, and hosts (JOBHERO, 2019). In this regard, a crew leader needs to be a patient, flexible, and transformational leader. Effective team management requires that the crew leader should act as a role model by being fair and accountable for his or her actions. The person filling the position, therefore, needs to be at least three years incumbent employee of the restaurant, and at least a high school diploma (Seven, 2918). The organizational committee should, therefore, identify an incumbent employee with the characteristics of a high-impactful leader, and promote him or her for the position of crew leader. The newly-promoted crew leader should then be taken through a series of training programs to enable him, or her to assume the role without or with minimal struggles.
The observation, promotion, and training approach to finding a crew leader is considered the most effective strategy for selecting the right crew leader for several reasons. First, the organization has first-hand information regarding the behaviors and credibility of the identified person. Secondly, the chosen person already has full knowledge regarding the organizational culture, goals, and mission; and, therefore, requires minimal time for orientation. Thirdly, the selected person is already a member of the organization and requires little salary increment as he or she assumes the new role. Finally, the chosen person is already conversant with the needs of both the junior workers and the organizational customers; hence stands a better chance to address the stakeholder needs effectively.
