An electrical system is one of the integral components of the aircraft, and its primary role is to produce electrical power, control and supply it to the rest of the plane's parts. The contemporary airplane often utilizes additional electrical power since they have extra Electronic Flight Instrument System (Wyatt & Tooley, 2009). It has been reported that this is done to specifically reduce the amount of pollution to the environment and ensure a safe flight. The electrical system capacity and complexity further tend to vary significantly from aircrafts ranging from multiengine jet to the single engine power plane. Almost all the aircraft electrical system comprises of individual components with the capability of generating electricity. Based on the types of aircraft, either a generator or an alternator can be used to produce electricity.
The majority of the modern plane uses a typical power of approximately 115 VAC@ 400Hz; 28VDC. Some common sources of electrical energy that are used in aircraft include Engine Driven AC Generators, Ram Air Turbine), Battery Supply or even Auxiliary Power Units. The aircraft electrical system also has some specific components including: AC Generator or Alternator that is used to generate AC power (Wyatt & Tooley, 2009). Further, Constant Speed Drive Unit (CSDU) is also commonly used in aircraft to regulate the rotating speed and ensure that it achieves a steady yield of power from the engines to the generators. Certain types of planes use an Integrated Drive Generators, Generators and the CSDU are also adopted, and these are connected coaxially which is commonly used but in other instances are connected side-by-side. Transformer Rectifier Unit (TRU) is utilized in the aircrafts and are used to convert the AC energy to DC. Lastly, Generator Control Unit can also be used to monitor and control the generator output. To measure the amount of electrical power released and supplied to parts of the plane, meters are used mainly D'Arsonval pointer and the digital multimeters. Most aircrafts using multimeters comprises of ammeters to show the demand of current (Faircloth, 1998).

In most planes, every engine will power up either one or more generator. For instance, Airbus A380 has been established to have about four engines in addition to 4 generators while Boeing 777 on the hand has two engines and two generators. Focusing on these two aircraft, the power generated from the generator is utilized in powering up the entire airplane. The rest of the energy sources apart from the external supply are used during the emergencies cases. External power supply is commonly utilized on the ground surface at a time when the aircraft engine together with the APU has stopped. This external power is however distributed through the Ground Power Unit. According to Wyatt & Tooley (2009), the GPU has been shown to be either stationary or portable and are used for generating the AC power via an external plug found on the nose of the plane. There are also other instances when GPU ignites and powers the whole engine or even a particular part of the airplane.
Some of the current single-engine crafts are very simple such that they do not require electrical system but piston engines comprise of Magneto ignition system that can automatically power itself. In the event electric starter, radio or even electric flight instruments and light are necessary; then there is the need to have electrical system introduced (Wyatt & Tooley, 2009). Most of the complicated electrical systems have been reported to be manifold voltage system and often use AC and DC busses combination to generate and distribute power to numerous components of the plane. Vital AC and DC components, on the other hand, are wired to particular busses, and further special provision is also made to generate power to the buses especially during failure circumstances. When all generated AC power has been lost Static Inverter is then introduced to ensure that AC bus is powered using the energy supplied by the batteries.
