Essentially, self-evaluation is a process where an individual looks at his/her development, progress and learning critically to determine the impact of a scenario or course on their life. Self- evaluation is very important especially for tutors and students since it helps them assess if the learning outcomes of a particular unit or course have been met successfully. This essay is my self-evaluation on my development as a student, a reflection my learning process, the amount of work and thought I have put in on the different reading and paper assignments as well as how the writing and reading have changed my perspective on literature and even on life in general. Self-evaluation should be critical and unbiased since it will help me as a student realize the new knowledge I have learnt, and this will help me set goals that I can achieve based on my acquired knowledge and perspectives.
This unit involved going through various intriguing and compelling texts, but the text that I find most compelling and exciting is the poem Elena by Pat Mora. I see this fascinating and persuasive since it clears explains the importance of the family connection between parents and their children an issue that is evident in our contemporary society. The poem is about a mother who was very close to her family in Mexico, but when they moved to America, they became very distant from each other. She feels very bad, and the author of the poem uses the speaker and the tone to express the feeling. The mother says "understanding every word they'd say." This phrase shows how the mother and her children were very close in Mexico and even spoke the same language. This phrase is full of hurt and emotion for losing the great connection and communication they had. Another phrase in the poem demonstrating lack of family bond is where the mother says, "They speak English. At night they sit around the kitchen table, laugh with one another." This poem has changed my perspective and made me appreciate family bond a lot. The mother is expressing her despair and heartache caused by the breakdown in communication. Therefore, it shows how important we should always strive to create and maintain a family bond.

The text that I found most difficult to read is Hamlet by Shakespeare. However, I was able to work through the difficulties and read it through to the end. The text is about a tragic history of Prince Hamlet of Denmark whose father, King Hamlet passed and his mother Queen Gertrude is married to Claudius. Claudius is King Hamlet's brother, and Prince is very troubled by the new married considering as complete incest. As if that was not enough, a ghost of King Hamlet comes into the prince's dream revealing of how he was poisoned while asleep and urges Hamlet to revenge his death. Hamlet decides to feign madness to find the truth about his father's death and Hamlet acts a play "The Murder of Gonzagoto" which features the style of a play within a play to portray how the king was killed. During that time Denmark was in a war, and at the end of the story Hamlet, his mother and his uncle are all dead, and Fortinbras seize the crown from Norway. The book clearly explains the tragic life experience of Prince Hamlet and portrays the traditional customs that existed. For instance, the marriage between Claudius and Queen Gertrude which Hamlet did not accept yet it was well accepted in the community. I found the study of the text rewarding in the end since I appreciated how literature could be used to explain the history and portray complex characters such as Hamlet who are hard to understand.
