What is the various roles police play in your community? What is their impact?

The primary role of the police is policing. This incorporates being responsible for maintaining public safety and order, enforcing the law, and investigating, detecting and preventing criminal activities. In the Lansing community, most individuals mostly obey the law whether an officer of the law is around or not.

How do your local police partner with citizens and other entities?

Broadly, to maintain order in Lansing, it is paramount for every citizen to get involved and work closely with the society in sharing and gathering valuable data with the Lansing Police Department.

What community programs (e. g., D.A.R.E., Police Explorers) are offered by your local police department? Explain the programs, including the benefits they provide to society and the role the police play in these programs.

Business Watch and Neighborhood Watch are foundational pillars for evident success in maintaining safety in the Lansing community. A neighborhood watch is an established effort by concerned local citizens for improving the quality of life in the community. Through working with the Lansing Police Department, the neighbors' works towards safeguarding one another's homes and minimizing the risk of crime in the society. The Business Watch is a free program that establishes a partnership between the Lansing Police Department and the community to mitigate crime by applying shared training and communication (lansingmi.gov). This program is essential as it helps in reducing business-related crimes. The police department helps in training the local community on ways of not becoming a target for crime.

Which criminal theories (biological, psychological, sociological) most align with the goals and/or programs you identified? (Refer to Ch. 3, "Explaining Crime," in your textbook as needed.)

Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch programs align with sociological theories that indicate that human beings live in social groups and structures that influence behavior. Broadly, the social environment, including neighborhoods, friends, and families, determines the criminal behavior of people (Bohm and Haley, 2018, p.73). An individual's contact with criminals influences this theory, and that the person will learn to adopt the criminal behaviors and values. Criminality is yielded by a person's inability to attain their objectives through socially acceptable methods. Therefore, faced with failure, the person is likely to turn on others– not mainly legally or socially acceptable means – to pursue his or her objectives through unacceptable methods.
