The primary job of a nurse is to ensure that the well-being and safety of the patients are catered for. Leadership styles practiced by nurses have a significant impact on the quality of care and patient outcomes within the medical context. The styles of leadership in nursing typically vary as per the different personalities, educational backgrounds, as well as types of work environment. However, it is important to note that leadership styles or techniques are usually valuable when utilized within the right context.

Types of Leadership Styles for Optimal Performance in Healthcare

Transformational Leadership

Transformational leaders usually forge robust relationships and inspire other nurses to act in an independent manner in order to attain the objectives and goals of the hospital. They usually do so by generating enthusiasm and confidence and are thus respected by the members of the staff (Seven Effective Leadership Styles in Nursing, 2020). This type of leadership ensures high productivity in employees, in conjunction with high loyalty rates and satisfaction. Therefore, this ensures that nurses operate at an optimal level.

Autocratic Leadership

This is a type of leadership whereby the leaders excel at making quick decisions and also delegate tasks, usually with limited employee consultations. Such leadership types are effective in disaster responses and emergency rooms, where actions ought to be taken quickly but are less effective in situations where nurses anticipated emotional distress or burnout.

Democratic Leadership

This is a type of leadership whereby the nurse leaders seek input from the workers and ensure that information is fairly distributed. This type of style is built on cooperation as well as individual growth among the employees.

Theoretical Frameworks for Healthcare Leaders to Succeed

One of the theoretical leadership frameworks that ensure successful outcomes for healthcare leaders is the NHS Leadership Model. This model describes what good leaders ought to do and help one develop as a leader by showing how one’s leadership behaviors affect the culture and climate of the workplace. The model features a self-assessment tool for leaders and 360 o degree feedback to help leaders in knowing more about their leadership traits and identify areas for improvement (Caredda, 2020). This gives leaders higher chances of success.

Difference Between Leadership and Management

There is a myriad of differences between leadership and management. One difference is that leadership is about inspiring, while management is more about planning. This is because leaders usually praise success and drive people, while managers work to find faults. In the same manner, while managers give directions, leaders ask questions and try to look for areas of improvement. Another important thing to note is that managers use an authoritarian style while leaders often use a motivational style of control.

Leadership and management seem like two opposition entities, but in order to have a successful organization, there ought to be a mixture of both. In this manner, effective leaders apply both skills while providing oversight of their organization as the amalgamation provides a balanced process whereby one complements the other by solving each other’s faults.

How I Will Improve My Leadership and Managerial Style to Better Serve the Team and the Organization

There are a plethora of ways I can improve my leadership and managerial styles. One of the ways is to find a mentor as it may be useful to seek guidance from an experienced manager who can serve as my advisor, especially when issues arise as they can offer their wisdom from their past experiences. Another way is to study different leadership and management styles and determine which one is ideal according to my preferences and it can also help identify my areas of strengths and weaknesses. Another simple way is to attend training and workshop to have a deeper insight into leadership and management.
