Clinical setting
The clinical setting that I anticipated entails a family practice clinic that has patients of all ages. Similarly, the patient populace and demographics entail individuals with similar social and economic characteristics, including individuals who are low-income earners, are from the African American ethnicity and have the same health characteristics. Some of the top health concerns for African Americans include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, vitamin D deficiency, HIV/AIDS, and cancer. The preceptors of the clinic also have several years of experience and are enthusiastic about teaching aspiring nurses about the nursing profession and how to provide high-quality care. They would also provide crucial information on how to decrease burnout and thus maintain efficiency in the work environment while delivering the highest standard of care. Most importantly, they would provide knowledge on how to integrate evidence-based practice into the care process.
Five Areas of Professional Growth
When it pertains to professional growth, there is a myriad of areas that I anticipate to improve my skills or learn new skills. For instance, in the area of wellness and disease management, I would like to learn ways of empowering the patients so that they can be able to provide self-care when they are suffering from chronic illnesses. Typically, in this scenario, patients are tasked with the responsibility of taking care of their health via the adoption of a healthy lifestyle and healthy eating habits (Flarey, 2012). Similarly, the process of empowerment also entails the involvement of other family members in actively participating in the self-care management process for the patient.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
The other area of professional growth that I look forward to is to gain advanced clinical assessment skills. This entails some of the advanced ways of diagnosis and initial assessment, which can be crucial to the patient care process as it speeds up the process of accurate diagnosis and treatment. Apart from taking the reading of the vital signs, some of the advanced assessments that I would like to develop include shift assessment and focused assessment, which typically entails a more detailed and thorough evaluation. For instance, part of the focused assessment includes the assessment of the neurological systems, growth and development, fine and motor skills, sensory functions, respiratory system, and other parts of the body (Nursing assessment, 2020). The inspections are more detailed and thus necessitate advanced knowledge, skills, and techniques in the process of assessment.
Other unique opportunities that I would like to pursue in the process of care is surgical nursing. Surgical nurses usually assist surgeons amid the operations, and they occasionally interact with patients before the procedure. This would go hand-in-hand with the advanced assessment skills because it would be complementary to it. I would also be interested in the prospects of nursing informaticist who often combine medical knowledge with technology as well as information management systems. Especially with the advent of Electronic Health Records and Electronic Medical Records, this can be a great opportunity to provide high-quality care for the patients as a result of the nursing informatics process.
One of the most crucial areas of professional development that I look to learn is in regard to the integration of evidence-based practice in the care process. This allows for the opportunity to provide patients with the most effective and up-to-date treatment methods while also ensuring that they are cost-efficient. This element entails being updated on the latest research and also undertaking formal research, particularly if I have identified areas for improvement (Chrisman et al., 2014).
During the clinical rotation, I would also love to develop leadership skills as they are usually essential, especially amid challenges and emergencies. This skill is imperative, especially considering the highly intricate environment that has a high patient acuity and is fast-paced. The leadership process also involves motivating and empowering other nurses to improve the quality of care, along with direct participation in clinical care (Al-Dossary, 2017). This skill is also important in personal growth as I can use it in diverse aspects of my life.
Potential Challenges During Clinical Rotation
Among the biggest challenges that I anticipate to face is that of time management as a result of hectic schedules and timelines entailed in this profession. Considering that one has to balance between coursework, reading homework, and undertaking clinical work, this can be very demanding. To solve this issue, I would need to have a perspective and be realistic about what I can achieve while attending the vigorous programs (Wojciechowski, 2017). I would then use this basis to create a comprehensive and holistic schedule that would help me in managing my time efficaciously.
I also expect to have challenges in undertaking evidence-based practice because it requires a careful and methodical approach to the process. In order to solve this problem, I would look towards professional help and help from my supervisors and managers in order to have a seamless action of integrating the latest research into my nursing practices.
