As one of the principal branches of mathematical logic, set theory is an area whose applicability cuts across almost all objects with a mathematics relevance. The field was initiated in the late 20th century by renown scientists such as Georg Cantor through axiom systems and paradoxes such as Russell’s. Today, the employment of set theory in mathematics remains far-reaching and has been extended to other fields of science. The history of set theory is paramount in understanding its widespread application. This paper will elucidate Leopold Kronecker’s contributions to set theory.

Kronecker was born in Prussia on December 7, 1823, and died at the age of 68. Throughout his career, the mathematician made tremendous scientific contributions, primarily through Mathematics Logic. He was an Alma Mater of the University of Berlin in Germany, where he also developed most of his works. Kronecker developed an impeccable interest in Mathematics, although it was not his initial field of study ( Sack, 2014 ). He also worked in the University of Gottingen where he headed the Mathematics department for a while then proceeded to work as a professor.

Leopold Kronecker majored in arithmetic and algebra, in which he made several historical contributions. He worked on the elliptic functions and several theories such as the theory of algebraic numbers and equations. Further, Kronecker developed a theory that offered an alternative approach to Julius Dedekind’s model and often disagreed with Georg Cantor ( Sack, 2014 ). Notably, the Mathematician was a principal critic of the nonconstructive existence proofs.

In summary, Leopold Kronecker is one of the Mathematician’s whose immense contributions have reshaped and developed the field of set theory. The former Berlin-based Mathematician offered criticism to his fellow scientists by developing alternative models that would later create a deeper understanding of set theory.
