The works of William Wordsworth made a mark in the field of English Literature. Some of his greatest compositions are found in Lyrical Ballads, which was published in 1798. The collection also includes poems by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Wordsworth later added a preface in 1800 explaining some of his poetry theories. Many believe that the preface was good enough to be used as a manifesto to lay out major principles of literature, especially in Britain. In the preface, Wordsworth justifies the styles and themes that he has employed in the Lyrical Ballads poems. One of the themes involved the use of an ordinary life, especially in a rural setting. He insisted on the utilisation of the natural environment and being connected to nature. He explored emotional experiences through imagination. He tried to bring out the possibility of exhibiting the extraordinary in an ordinary environment. According to him, poetry should reflect emotions obtained in tranquillity. Wordsworth recommended the act of reflecting on an experience. He proposed the use of common language instead of the poetic diction that was used traditionally. William also preferred the use of ordinary people and everyday experiences. He also believed that poems should have rhythm.

The poem depicts most of the styles and themes suggested by Wordsworth. It shows emotions in tranquillity where the persona describes of the sweet memories he experienced in the desolate landscapes where he hears the waters rolling from the mountain springs. He enjoys the serene environment provided by nature. He talks of the quiet sky and the deep seclusion. The aspect of nature is also brought out in the poem. The persona describes the unripe fruits in the orchard, the dark sycamore, the growing hedgerows, the cottage-ground and the green hue that all these bring out. However, the author of the poem has mixed standard language and the traditional one which is sometimes hard to relate to in the modern day. Also, the poem is placed in a common life setting. We see the hedgerows in the orchard as well as the rural farms. He also expresses the nostalgic memories during the time that he spent on the landscapes as advocated by Wordsworth. The persona remembers the beautiful moments on the riverbanks. In general, the poem exhibits most of Wordsworth recommended aspects of a poem.
