Grossman (2012) article redefines the definition of literary fiction. Based on the article, there are many definitions of fiction, which include literary and genre fiction. Otherwise, the article notes that all genre fictions are poor quality, which stands out as the main argument. Subsequently, Percy (2008) short story, ‘Refresh, Refresh,’ blends both genre and literary fiction. Benjamin Percy’s theory is an amalgamation of literary and genre fiction that is designed to draw the emotional response of a reader. When the story begins, Percy places characters in a makeshift boxing ring that men use to train. This decision is significant as it keeps readers guessing what to expect next; whether the characters will fight or train. The characters end up fighting. This kind of fiction is genre fiction because it keeps readers pounding on what can be the next cause of action in subsequent parts of the story, which fits in the young-adult genre.

The events that take place in Percy’s story, from the characters being placed in the ring to ending up fighting are what happens to most people who are aged between nineteen to thirty years. Also, there is an example of literary fiction that is brought out in the story going by the fact that the story by Percy gets readers deep into the emotional struggle. The part of the text where Percy puts readers to contemplate the actions that the two characters in the boxing ring would do would perfectly fit as supermarket paperback in Grossman’s article. Therefore, the beginning section of Percy’s article feels like it belongs in a literary short story because the characters drive the plot in a way a reader might make their conclusion. Otherwise, my long-term goals with writing are to create short stories that could be published in magazines. I believe this course will help me discover genre-based fiction writing skills.
