Livy and Herodotus were historians who expressed their historical ideas in almost different noticeable ways of articulating certain events. Some of the events that they expressed in different perspectives include the transition of leaders together with the logic and reasoning of the then ongoing war which is widely covered by both of them. A good example is in Livy’s writing of “The History of Rome” in which he writes with a native voice to express the views of the people about his concept of writing. An example of the events that Livy tries to express using the native voice in his writing of “The History of Rome” is the reign and collapse of the rule of Tullus Hostilius and Livy effectively uses this style in his writing to express the feeling of the Romans about what they believed Tullus was doing religious rituals incorrectly.
Similarly, Herodotus also uses an equally same style as Livy and similar outline in expressing historical events like Livy. Even though Herodotus was writing about a different history in a very different time as compared to Livy, the similarity in the historical writing of the two authors can be drawn to a close range. For the case of Herodotus, this similarity can be drawn from a few areas like the decision of Xerxe of joining the war against Athens after his campaign against the Egyptians all for his benefit and to avenge the loss of his father, Darius . However, Xerxe had a dream after meeting with his council and seeking for their opinions. In the dream, a phantom spoke to him about his change of plan and told him that it was not a good idea and should have maintained his initial plan. This concept of the phantom in a dream that reveals to Xerxe before the war is a style used by Herodotus to express the storyline of his writing. Just like Livy, Herodotus uses several other styles like prophecies and divinations along this godly dream to realize a voice that is realistic to the time and history of his writing.
