The United States’ legislature and judicial system are burdened with the task to alleviate the homelessness problem. Sam Levin, a contributor to The Guardian, in his article, “‘Full-scale emergency’: musician burned in his tent highlights LA’s homeless crisis,” explores the aftermath of the demise of a guitarist who succumbed to his demise when his tent was ‘intentionally’ set ablaze. The death of the guitarist, Darrell Fields, demystified the extent of the Los Angeles homelessness problem and the rampancy of arson incidents in the United States. The magnitude of the homelessness problem is illustrated by the fact that the LA county’s officials revealed that more than 36,000 people are homeless in Los Angeles. The underlying assumption is Darrel would not have met his untimely demise had he been appropriately housed.
Although the article is incisive and informative, it has some strengths and weaknesses. The information presented in the article is reliable owing to the fact that it has been backed by findings from other sources such as the LA County’s official count report, testimonials and accounts offered by credible persons such as Adam Rice, an LA Can organizer and Kayo Anderson, a Skid Row Advocate, multiple opinions from other scholars. Furthermore, the article is published on a reputable news platform; hence, it can be projected that the information has been verified. The critical weakness of the article is its shambolic structure that makes the piece difficult to follow. As a result, it is difficult for a reader to pinpoint the primary argument conveyed by the author. Moreover, the fact that the article is neither peer-reviewed nor authored by an expert in the field of sociology renders it academically unreliable. By reading the article, I liked the fact that the author amalgamated other people’s testimonies and statements in the article. However, I dislike the fact that the arguments were not supported by academically acceptable sources.
