Nursing has a variety of impacts on healthcare quality. A competent nurse knows the expectations of the patients that they deal with. The quality of a nurse can be impacted by the environment in which they work from. This essay is a reference to the article, “Lower Mortality in Magnet Hospitals” by McHugh et al. The article was published by Medical Care in the year 2013. The article outlines the nurse’s effect on the outcome of patient mortality caused by post-surgical complications from 56 magnet healthcare facilities and 508 non-magnet healthcare facilities. There are several differences between magnet and non-magnetic hospital mortality rates and nurses’ contribution to the mortality rates as discussed hereinafter.

Magnet’s designation criterion has changed in the past years since 1994. The process changed from the simple process that it was to a multifaceted process. Only a few hospitals are magnet-recognized hospitals which are roughly less than ten percent of the entire hospitals. Magnet hospitals are more accommodating in that they have more beds and the services provided are not aimed at attaining profits as compared to non-magnet hospitals. This increases the hospitals’ chances of implementing modern technologies and nurses who are competent ( ANCC Magnet Recognition Program) . The article as well notes that there are high chances for such facilities to do well in the field of healthcare. The inpatient rate of mortality is lower I magnet hospitals as compared to non-magnet hospitals and have nurses who work in a competent manner.

In conclusion, the article gives clear differences between magnet and non-magnet hospitals from a statistical perspective. The data provided I the article is clear and easy to comprehend. Magnet designation might or might not impact patient outcomes unlike quality nursing. In addition to that, such hospitals undergo reviews and must prove that they have transformative leadership, structural empowerment, competent medical practitioners, current innovations and improvements (McHugh, 2013).
