Making a decision that has ethical issues in it is a challenge for most people. It is even more challenging when it is the first time a person is faced with a significant decision-making dilemma. It is because when faced with an ethical dilemma, any decision made has a consequence. One solution of reducing a burden of moral dilemma that I have learned so far is setting your principles beforehand. Setting principles involve knowing your priority when dealing with your fellow human beings. It saves you the problem of making impulsive decisions which may leave you with regrets later. Engaging other people in making decisions is also another solution. Sometimes it helps to hear the perspective of someone else concerning a particular issue because the issue of ethics differs from one person to another.
My ethical dilemma experience and the decision I chose is based on the utilitarianism ethical theory. In my case, I decided what was likely to yield benefit to the majority. Saving the life of a mother and her child and risking the job security of my dad is in line with the theory. Lessons learned so far makes me value the approach even in the future situations. In addition to the theory, I have also learned to consult people on various ethical issues. Consultation is an excellent way of also understanding what other people view as ethically wrong or right different from your take. In a situation such as a workplace, it is good to communicate and understand the perspective of your colleagues to sharpen your ethical decisions. There is no perfection in issues about ethics as there are always new instances that present a moral dilemma. Interactions with other people is a right way of improving the choices we make to be seen as ethically correct by those around us.
