Conflict plays an integral part in every story or play. The author uses the conflict between the characters to develop a plot. Both The Lottery and A Good Man is Hard to Find illustrate conflict. However, each author has presented conflict in a different way. This paper compares the use of man versus man conflict between the two stories.
A Good Man is Hard to Find illustrates man versus man conflict in a better way than The Lottery . The conflict that appears in The Lottery is mainly between a person and the society. Mrs. Hutchison protests the results of the lottery because she deems them unfair. The other members of the society respond by stoning her to death because she was opposing a norm that they considered right (Jackson, 1984).

A Good Man is Hard to Find portrays man versus man conflict in numerous occasions. The Grandmother opposes Bailey’s decisions and even incites the rest of the family against him. For instance, Bailey wants to take his family to Florida for a vacation. However, the Grandmother insists that the family should go to East Tennessee because she has friends there. During the journey Florida, The Grandmother suggests that the family should visit a house with a secret panel. Bailey immediately opposes the suggestion. The Grandmother decides to incite the other family members by telling them lies about the house in order to pressure Bailey. The misfit and The Grandmother have opposing views about Christianity. For instance, the Grandmother urges The Misfit to pray so that Jesus can help him. He responds by saying that ‘I don’t want no help’ to show that he doesn’t believe in the Christian beliefs that The Grandmother holds (O'Connor, 1964).
