The topic chosen for discussion is interventions to enhance dietary condition, and the research under the topic is interventions to promote compliance to dietary recommendation for stopping and dealing with enduring ailments in grown-ups. The topic of the analysis seeks to riposte the query of what types of interventions can enhance obedience to advice on food consumption. The WHO defines a chronic disease as a condition of long period that overall has a slow development (Schulze et al. 2018). Examples of prevalent chronic diseases comprise CVDs, diabetes, asthma, cancer, renal failure, obesity, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. According to Sophie et al., (2013), non-adherence to nutritional intake exposes a patient to the risk of contracting health problems. The WHO Health Promotion programs emphasize the need for deterring and handling chronic conditions and the risk elements. Nutrition is one of the risk factors. In a study by Rodríguez-Rodríguez et al. (2017), epidemiologic, clinical, and experimental studies show a robust association between nutrition patterns and averting and control of chronic ailments, such as obesity and diabetes. Non-adherence dietary advice for adults suffering from chronic conditions can lead to a significant threat to their health, and compliance to such advice is pivotal in preventing and managing chronic ailments. Hence, this paper aims to carry out a literature review of the research article and provide the search method employed to answer the study question.

Article Search

The online databases that were used to carry out the literature review include Google Scholar, Pub Med, EMBASE, and CINAHL. The search items included dietary interventions, nutrition in adults, chronic diseases, adherence to the diet, and risk factors. The type of articles was limited to peer-reviewed academic journals, descriptive statistics, and written in English. The research was also limited to the studies conducted between the years 2013 to 2020. Moreover, to narrow down the research, the selection of articles was based on articles that covered several chronic ailments instead of one primary condition.

Article Findings

The findings from the article search led the author to settle on one article, which is discussed in the paper. The article includes a study conducted by Kelly et al. (2016). According to the research by Kelly et al. (2016), the researchers carried out a systemic assessment which evaluated randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The RCTs reviewed various interventions used when dealing with adults suffering from chronic ailments and a meta-analysis—the meta-analysis comprised of 25 studies, which had a total number of 7,384 participants. The meta-analysis intended to evaluate the efficiency of using telehealth as a nutrition intervention for addressing nutritional challenges in adults suffering from chronic conditions.

According to Kelly et al. (2016), telehealth as an intervention may be hindered by potential barriers. However, telehealth is useful in helping patients to acquire nutritional programs and get reliable feedback concerning the precise dietary needs the patients require. Dietary changes may be overwhelming for patients suffering from a chronic condition to manage; telehealth is easily accessible and may provide routine support and education for a patient. The article by Kelly et al. (2016) is pertinent for this article review. The article answers the study question by providing evidence-based solutions for the importance of telehealth in increasing adherence to advice on nutritional intake.

Evidence for Practice

The article by Kelly et al. (2016) is feasible for implementation with the focus on improving the standard of life of adults enduring chronic diseases. Old age is associated with forgetfulness and memory loss, mostly because of neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, telehealth serves as an essential intervention to assist adults in coping up with dietary recommendations. According to Kelly et al. (2016), telehealth has been effective in improving dietary intake compliance and the quality of the diet consumed. Apart from face-to-face visits and phone calls, the article stresses the need to adopt telehealth interventions to alter the dietary behavior of a patient. The study provides conclusive data that shows how the implementation of telehealth promotes adherence to dietary intake advices. Hence, this could encourage healthcare networks to adopt this intervention.

Sharing Evidence

The article by Kelly et al. (2016) is feasible, and the findings of the research encourage the use of telehealth by health facilities to improve dietary adherence. The data generated from the study should be shared with nutritional experts, primary caregivers, and healthcare networks. In primary care centers, patients usually require frequent follow-ups with their primary caregivers. Hence, such facilities would benefit from telehealth intervention as it will relieve the burden of conducting follow-ups. Also, telehealth could save time in scenarios where a patient forgets his/her dietary recommendation. The caregiver may remind the patient immediately without the client vising the office. The data from the article on the importance of telehealth on improving dietary compliance may be shared using pamphlets or brochures and also via television advertisements. Alternatively, medical representatives can be used to accurately and efficiently share the findings from the study. Medical representatives have the opportunity to explain the importance of telehealth interventions to healthcare providers directly.

Conclusion

Chronic diseases are a global pandemic, especially in older adults. There is an essence to reduce the use of chemotherapeutic solutions to managing chronic conditions. In turn, substitute the chemotherapeutic solutions with nutritional solutions. The aim of this paper was to carry out an evaluation of an existing research article and issue the search method employed to answer the study question. Hence, this article review provides a solution to recognizing the form of intervention to improve adherence to dietary recommendations. The study by Kelly et al. measured the efficiency of telehealth as a dietary intervention to aid adults in observing nutritional intake advices and manage chronic ailments. The results from the study show the proof of why telehealth intervention should be incorporated within the health system.
