Time shifting is a term used to describe the recording and to store data for viewing, listening and reading in a later event. In the television media, a device called the personal video recorder enables time shifting. In older days before technological equipment, emerged videocassettes recorders were used. Time shifted programs has become the compelling television component for television consumers. Time shifting can also enable a user to pause live television and can even record the programs of his liking. Time shifting can also allow television users to go back in time and watch programs that ended and where aired. 

Technological changes have swept the television and media industry, and the industry has had to adapt to the changes of time shifting. Time shifting has seen most televisions stations attract customers. Due to their desire of flexibility and the willingness to have whatever they want, television stations must adapt to time shifting since most customers would rather have want they want and watch and pause programs whenever they like, And this capability can only be enabled by time shifting. Time shifting can also increase the overall consumption of content. Time shifting television programs have decreased the amount of time that customers spend in the old generation content. Time shifting also can increase the viewings of commercials that are put up in the programs.

These technologies will affect the future of television positively because it will establish various business models and technical requirements. Service providers require a wide range of options when executing their services. Future technological advances will develop new ways of time shifting that will suit both them and the customers. Time shifting, therefore, has been a crucial aspect of television. Television viewership can now compete with online streaming channels that offer their services through the internet rendering viewership of TV useless.
