The nursing clinical at St. Luke's nursing home exposed me to the psychiatric treatment models used at the facility. The use of milieu treatment encompassed with an excellent nurse-patient relationship helps patients to recover from depressions and mental health issues. The use of milieu therapy at the facility encourages more social interactions, thus helps to distract patients from their distress and puts them on a recovery journey. Consequently, the facility had registered a decreased need for the use of stimulation to treat mental health issues.
An open communication approach at the facility helped break barriers of communication. Patients were free to consult nurses, counselors, and resident psychiatrists. The health care providers' empathetic responses and follows ups after discussions ensured that patients were forthcoming with information. Language translators were also at hand to break any language barriers. Most mental patients score poorly on the use of social skills. The facility encourages health practitioners to use social skills in their treatment approaches. The social skills range from active listening, empathy, respect, conversational skills, grooming, problem-solving skills, and the use of verbal and non-verbal cues. The facility has cultivated an inductive culture whereby new workers are oriented into different programs. Consequently, residents at the facility were dedicated to providing patients holistic treatment. Residents at the facility worked in shifts and for the required duration. This conducive environment ensured that the residents were well-rested and helped counter any anxiety that may occur at the workplace.

My nurse- resident relationship at the facility was collaborative and directed at achieving the best results for the client. Using a consultative approach, we tailored patient programs that produced excellent results. I improved my self-confidence in nurse-patient interactions by familiarizing myself with the operations at the facility. Mutual interactions with work colleagues also helped improve my self-confidence. By observing how other nurses, residents, and counselors were handling patients, I developed my self-confidence. sI also enhanced my knowledge and confidence by learning different clinical skills useful when engaging with patients.
Handling psychiatric patients with different traits can be quite draining. However, my open and non-prejudiced approach to patients helped ensure that I offered the best care possible. Also, despite feeling worn out at the end of the day, my desire and passion for assisting psychiatric patients in improving their daily lives helped to keep me going. To ensure that I remain in an excellent state of health to continue offering patients holistic care, I practice self-care measures. My self-care program involves observing healthy eating habits, engaging in physical exercise, good sleeping habits and observing stress-reducing measures. The stress-reducing measures include meditation and useful problem-solving techniques.
