The authors assert that establishing school-based health centers (SBHCs) will help improve the provision of mental health services among high schoolers. SBHCs are within reach of most high school students, thus making it easy for them to seek immediate solutions whenever they face mental health issues. Therefore, SBHCs are efficient and effective because they help eliminate accessibility barriers to mental health services. SBHCs also contain mental health professionals that are conversant with mental health challenges that affect high schoolers. SBHCs mental health professionals, therefore, will be in a position to notice and observe high-risk behaviors among high schoolers and immediately provide mental health services to treat such behaviors.

Supportive interactions among teachers, mental health specialists, parents, students, and community members will foster cooperation, thereby making it possible to access to quality mental health services. The provision of better mental health services will help decrease disruptive behaviors, increase social skills, and improve the well-being of high schoolers.

The use of integrated care links up physical health, mental health, and social care, thereby ensuring that young people receive holistic mental health services in a coordinated way.

Also, there is a need to transform the way psychiatric services are provided to allow meaningful exploration of the nature of mental health disorders presented by youths to help reduce their unmet needs.

The authors argue that developing a complex, multidisciplinary, and intersectional care would at the community setting help better provide mental health care. They identified three top strategies to help hat would help strengthen the provision of mental health care. The strategies identified include empowering families, care providers, and mental health patients. Other strategies include developing collaborative interventions and e-health interventions. 

O’Brien, D., Harvey, K., Howse, J., Reardon, T., & Creswell, C. (2016). Barriers to managing child and adolescent mental health problems: a systematic review of primary care practitioners’ perceptions.  Br J Gen Pract 66 (651), e693-e707. 

O'Brien et al. point out that even though effective treatments for mental health disorders in adolescents are available, only a minority has affected access to them. Therefore, the best way to address the concern is for care practitioners to acknowledge the existence of the barriers that prevent effective access to care. Some of the barriers include financial restrictions, lack of providers and resources, and extensive waiting lists. The researchers propose that the provision of mental health services among high school goers is only possible by strengthening the ability to deal with the available common difficulties in primary care. Also, mental health specialists need to be trained to aid accurate identification and management of barriers to accessing the services.
