However, in the wake of numerous chronic diseases in the recent decades, there has been a growing demand for acute curative services to respond to the life-threatening emergencies. As a result, many hospitals have grown in complexity in their health care delivery systems. Such complications encompass effective interventions in prevention, cure, and rehabilitation through acute medicine, emergency care, surgical services, critical care and trauma systems. These domains of treatments are known as acute care. Acute care refers to timely cost-effective health interventions that focus primarily on reducing the risks of a developing disease in hospitals with specialized clinical personnel, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies and technical equipment.

About Connecticut, public health code, Mercy Hospital, qualifies as an acute care health facility. Mercy Medical Centre is a Catholic hospital located 345 St Paul Place, Baltimore, Maryland D 21202. The service is headed by one of the most influential Marylanders Thomas R. Mullen, CEO a recipient of the Maryland Stars of Life Awards and Health Services Leadership Award by the Baltimore area council. The Emergency Department provides round the clock services for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and other urgent medical conditions and injuries. On the other hand, the main hospital has a team of specialized doctors and nurses who work closely with patients to offer numerous treatments. The Hoffberger breast centre, for instance, offers surgical treatment for breast cancer, breast reconstructive surgery, post-surgical treatment of lymphedema, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy and sentinel lymph node biopsy. Conditions treated include; Breast lumps, calcifications, cysts and nipple discharge, breast pain and breast cancer.

While the centre serves as a teaching hospital, it also ranks nationally as one adult speciality, a third best hospital in Baltimore and 38th best in all of United States. Latest annual report indicates a record of about 7,288 yearly inpatients for surgery and 21,466 outpatient surgeries. The emergency department, on the other hand, had a history of 64,807 annual visits. Mercy Hospital has up to 16 medical specialities which include; cancer, orthopaedics, geriatrics, urology, neurology, gynaecology, surgery and other related specialities. The healthcare has an acute bed capacity of 262.

Regarding awards and accreditations, Mercy Medical Centre has been recognized as a leading comprehensive patient care facility in the Mid-Atlantic region. According to the U.S News and World Report 2017/18, the health care is ranked best in Orthopedics based on nurse staffing, high-risk patients and patient survival ("Hospital Awards & Accreditations - Mercy Medical Center, Baltimore, MD," n.d.). It has also achieved the highest rating in treating of patients with Heart failure, Pulmonary Diseases, and Hip-Knee Replacement. Due to successes in spine surgery and total joint replacement Mercy has been recognized as an Athena Institute of Quality.

The assessment of cooperate social responsibilities by Mercy gives insights of its role in helping the community. The healthcare has shown resilience and commitment towards fostering goodwill within the State of Maryland and beyond. This includes an array of support programs such as free medical examinations, offering donations to the poor, orphans and elderly as well as providing volunteer ship programs during a crisis. This dedication to community service is aimed at showing compassion to diverse groups in a manner that reflect the missions and values of the hospital.
