Migration of the Nurses and Facilitating Their Transition to the United States Systems

Chronic nursing shortage in various parts of the world is massively aggravated by the increased migration of nurses who seek better wages, quality of life and a favorable working condition. Nurses have become among the first groups to migrate, and today, they form the majority of the professional immigrants in the US (Squires, Ojemeni & Jones, 2016). The purpose of the paper is to find own strategies on how these spheres can advocate or make changes to help the nurses migrating to the United States or transition to the United States systems. 

Certain strategies have been tried before to help advocate for nurses migrating to the United States and ensure that they transition to the United States systems. Elimination of visa restriction in addition to easier licensure requirements for the migrating nurses has been utilized over the years to facilitate the transition to the United States systems (usnews, 20176). Enticement from various institutional employers of large nurse numbers together with commercial nurse recruitment stakeholders are more likely to facilitate the transition to the United States systems.

One of the strategies from the spheres of influence is focused on the government of the US. The government has a critical role to play to facilitate nurse’s migration to the US through the use of positive policies and enable them to transition to the United States systems (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2013). The government should establish a policy that will motivate and encourage nurses who have migrated to the US through focusing on attractive minimum wage and promote equality in employment opportunities and promotion. 

The second strategy from the spheres of influence to help nursing immigrants to transition to the United States systems is the workplace strategy. Cramer, Staggs & Dunton, (2014) asserts that improving the working place condition in the US is one of the most effective strategies to help nursing immigrants transition to the United States systems and be comfortable working there. There should be all the necessary instruments, facilities, and infrastructures that would create a safe and comfortable working place for these nurses. nap.edu (2017) posit that a good working condition which would help nurses migrating to the United States to effectively transition will ensure that they are all absorbed and retained in the US. 

The US nursing associations have a pivotal role to play in facilitating nursing immigrant’s transition to the United States systems. Masselink & Jones, (2014) notes that, nursing associations should advocate for better pay for immigrant nurses and push for the implementation of policies that would improve the quality of life for these nurses. Nursing association should take the initiative to propose better terms of payment and present the views of these nurses to the central government (Brush, Sochalski & Berger, 2014). Such a strategy will help them to efficiently transition to the US system and feel that they are well served. 

Finally, the US community at large has a critical role to play in aiding nursing immigrant’s transition to the United States systems. Research has pointed that majority of the nurses are forced to migrate as a result of pressure from factors, hence need an environment and community that would accommodate them (Neff et al, 2013). The US community should thus welcome them, understand them in case of language barrier and support them when they need help. It would be important for community members to shun away from racial discrimination and accommodate these nurses as part of them. 

The sphere that focuses on government policy has the considerable influence in managing nursing immigration and enhances their transition to the United States systems because the ball stops with the government. They have adequate resources to create more job opportunities that will ensure that all migrating nurses are absorbed (Gabriel, 2013). Secondly, the government can create a policy that will demand employers to offer better pay and create a conducive working environment for migrating nurses (McNamara & Batalova, 2015). 

Based on this analysis, it is clear that the nursing shortage is a huge problem to the US and will undermine the quality of care; therefore, the spheres discussed above will help improve their transition to the United States systems thus addressing the shortage in the future. Therefore, it is crucial to implement these strategies as a way to advocate and manage nurses migrating into the US.
