Response to Makala King
The type of care and services offered to diverse populations can shift drastically and in unexpected ways. I agree with you that there is a need for the clinical field to expand and serve diverse populations. These populations’ perspectives on therapy and other healthcare practices are greatly informed by what their communities think. Healthcare practitioners often do not have in mind that the behaviors are discussed among community members, which in turn become the oral traditions that are kept within the populations (Henrietta Lacks: science must right a historical wrong, 2020). As such, if one has a negative experience, they will inform the beliefs of others in their community, thus impacting the trust they have with service providers and treatment systems.

Diverse populations indeed mistrust the treatment systems because of discrimination that other members of their communities have faced. Research shows that people of color enter substance use treatment with more severity of SUD and related consequences but experience more barriers to treatment than their white counterparts (Matsuzaka & Knapp, 2020). These discriminations thus bring about stigma, forcing them to develop unhealthy coping styles like mistrusting the system and refusing to seek out help as they are convinced, they will have negative experiences. I believe your suggestion on developing stronger support groups is effective as it ensures individuals with SUD have reliable and effective help once they are discharged from the treatment facilities.
