I recently had a face-to-face conversation with my best friend where we discussed the possibility of starting a business together. We have always been interested in going to business together, and we finally decided to talk about it. We both took turns to state our ideas and explain the benefits and disadvantages of each business. We also discussed where our source of funding and ideal location would be.

I believe this type of conversation follows the transactional model of communication. I learned that the conversation was effective because we know each other and practiced turn-taking when conversing. We are also from a similar environment and share the same social system. These reasons made it possible for effective communication as we had similar underlying issues informing our reactions to the subject.

The concept of noise and feedback influenced the conversation between my best friend and me. My best friend had recently developed a cold and was feeling fatigued. As we communicated, I could see she struggled to maintain the conversation and provide appropriate feedback based on the information I was telling her. It was evident that the effects of psychological noise were hindering effective communication.

Future conversations can be more effective if communicators bear the following point in mind. Individuals need to eradicate noise or find ways to mitigate the effects of noise when communicating. Communicators ought to ensure they listen keenly and offer appropriate feedback. They also need to ensure that they share an environment to ensure they create shared meaning in their communication process. Moreover, communicators must apply principles of competent communication through respecting themselves and taking responsibility for communication behavior. These principles ensure communicators use clear terms when talking to avoid ambiguity and that communicators consider each other’s needs to ensure a win-win outcome from every transactional communication.
