The main purpose of the study was to give a systemic review of motivational interviewing, which was achieved through the study results. Additionally, the article reviewed the use of MI in various offenses including substance abuse, which is the principal crime that benefits from motivational interviewing. From the study, it is evident that MI is effective in rehabilitating substance abusers. Personally, reading the article was an enlightening experience as it provided the knowledge that substance abusers only need patience and proper guidance for them to stop using drugs. In addition, most substance users need awareness and the ability to have a reason to make the right decision and quit drugs.

Claro, H. G., Oliveira, M. A. F. D., Paglione, H. B., Soares, R. H., Okazaki, C., & Vargas, D. D. (2013). Strategies and possibilities of motivational interviewing in adolescence: an integrative review.  Texto & Contexto-Enfermagem 22 (2), 543-551.

This article focuses on one population abusing drugs abuse, the adolescents. Indeed, there is an increase in the use of drugs by adolescents. Consequently, studies demonstrate that motivational interviewing is one of the possible therapies for the young generation who are abusing drugs. The research, therefore, focuses on providing a review of the literature regarding the effectiveness of the use of motivational interviewing on adolescents who are substance abusers. The study entailed using 22 literatures and ultimately showed that the use of MI reduced patterns of drug abuse.

The primary purpose of the article is proving the effectiveness of motivational interviewing in adolescent substance abusers. The article, by way of showing that adolescents indeed benefit from motivational interviewing, provides a reason why individuals should use motivational interviewing. As such, the article achieves its purpose by giving a detailed analysis and categorization of literature as well as providing a wide-ranging assessment of the literature. The article creates awareness on the use of drugs by adolescents explicitly and provides a way of remedying the situation. It brings to light the fact that adolescents only need guidance to make the right decisions.

Stein, L. A., Lebeau, R., Colby, S. M., Barnett, N. P., Golembeske, C., & Monti, P. M. (2011). Motivational interviewing for incarcerated adolescents: effects of depressive symptoms on reducing alcohol and marijuana use after release.  Journal of studies on alcohol and drugs 72 (3), 497-506.

This article is a study on using motivational interviewing on adolescents. In particular, it focuses on the effects of depressive symptoms on reduce alcohol and marijuana use by incarcerated adolescents after release. The study entailed studying 162 adolescents’ males who were imprisoned. They received motivational interviewing and relaxation training and a follow-up three months after they were released. Results showed that those who used motivational training did not resort to drug use after release. As such, the authors concluded that motivational interviewing was effective in reducing drug use in adolescents, but it should be combined with relaxation training to reduce depressive symptoms.

The article achieved its purpose with the use of the study of adolescent inmates. By way of comparison, one can see that motivational interviewing is beneficial just the same way relaxation training is helpful in reducing depressive symptoms. However, relaxation training does not stop the youth from abusing drugs again. For that reason, the two methods should be used together. The article is informative about the use of motivational training. Personally, it has helped me in understanding what adolescents go through when they are incarcerated and how to remedy the problems.
