Musculoskeletal disorders as the name suggests are disorders that affect the bones and muscles including tendons and ligaments. Musculoskeletal ailments have different causes, which include the damage of muscle tissue from wear and tear resulting from the day to day activities, fractures and dislocations, prolonged immobilization, and postural strain. They are also caused by poor body mechanics that result in spinal alignment problems and tension in muscles, hence, causing other muscles to be fatigued and misused resulting in constant pain (Dall et al., 2013). Musculoskeletal pains are usually diagnosed with a thorough physical examination. The symptoms of musculoskeletal pain vary from one patient to another but are commonly characterized by fatigue, pain, and sleep disorders.

Musculoskeletal disorders can be treated by medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) in cases of inflammation or pain and also through therapeutic practices (Field, 2018). The therapeutic practices employed in dealing with musculoskeletal pains include physical therapy, occupational therapy, yoga, chiropractic care, and therapeutic massage. The integration of yoga and naturopathy in dealing with musculoskeletal pains has been scientifically proven to be effective. The two practices have proven beneficial in reduction of shoulder pain and the increase in shoulder range of movement. Underwater massage and hydrotherapy relieve muscle pains and also enhance neuromuscular coordination. Yoga is also advisable in rehabilitation particularly because it focuses on mental and physical health. Yoga has proven useful especially in the management of low back pains rheumatic arthritis and on healing pains in carpal tunnel syndrome. Massage therapy, on the other hand, is recommendable when dealing with chronic back pains.

Occupational therapy entails the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations) in dealing with musculoskeletal pains. Occupational therapy can also be instrumental in dealing with mental disorders. Other than yoga, chiropractic treatment is also recommendable in dealing with back pains resulting from sports, injuries, and accidents (Dall, 2013). Chiropractors use their hands to professionally manipulate the spine with the idea of aligning the musculoskeletal structure. According to chiropractors, this alignment enables the body to heal without the intervention of surgery or medication automatically.
