‘ Music for Torching’ is a novel written by Holmes about a disturbed family of four. We are shown Elaine and Paul as they clean the kitchen after an evening party. They are both drunk and Paul asks Elaine what she thinks about Henry’s date who he arranged to call him the next day. He tries to have sex with Elaine when they are cleaning who breaks his skin with a knife. The next evening, the couple attends a cookout at George’s place after leaving their children with a babysitter. Later on, Paul has to drive Jennifer the babysitter and Liz’s daughter back home, he inquires from Jennifer what his wife does the whole day and he is told that she fucks her mother. Paul does not know whether it is a joke or not. She returns back home to find her mother-in-law who will return back home the following day. They have sex with Elaine though neither of them is satisfied. Next Elaine and the children are playing outside when Paul arrives. They set up a grill which torches up the house on fire when Paul splashes some gasoline and Elaine knocks down the grill.
We see how art is used to shape up and influence society. This piece of work has used both morally defective and morally positive features to show how it can affect our behaviours. These moral qualities that we have seen include infidelity, social consciousness, violence, and sex. The artist has made a massive impact by appealing to our senses, emotion, language, and imagination. I think the moral value is related to artistic value because we are affected by things we read that seems like something we can or should aspire.
