One character that I found moving or engaging in ‘’Going After Cacciato’’ is Paul Berlin. He acts as the main protagonist in the story and is depicted as a rookie soldier who is struggling with many conflicted feelings regarding his family, war, violence, and his peers ( O'Brien, 1999). Berlin is also represented as a person with problems in his relationship with other including his parents and Sarkin Aung Wan, a lady who turns out only to be using Berlin. The character of Berlin resonates well with me because I view him as central to the main theme of the novel because it turns out that he was responsible for firing the shots that murdered Cacciato in Vietnam.
The author of focus this week is Tim O’Brien. He is an American novelist who was born in 1946 and is known for many short stories among them ‘’Going After Cacciato.’’ Most of his stories are autobiographical because they are actually based on a true reflection of his life. During his early years, he was involved in the Vietnam War, and therefore most of his works were inspired by this experience. He is also known to have authored several books regarding the postwar lives of veterans something that was well known to him given that he interacted with most of them (Tim O’Brien Biography).

Cacciato goes AWOL putting his squad in a dilemma of whether to find him or continue with their mission and neglecting the deserter. From the evidence in the excerpt, it seems that the troops decided to go about the mission after soldiers such as Harry Murphy so no sense in risking their entire lives for the sake of one deserter. They realized that finding Cacciato would cause more problems that would be detrimental to their mission.
