My journey in nursing school has been a long and tedious one, filled with both pleasurable and grilling moments. My biggest challenge, however, was the lack of a mentor. From a young age, I was always good with computers, which is why choosing nursing came as a shock to my parents as they expected me to pursue a career in I.T. When I decided to take a nursing course, the overwhelming support I needed was nowhere to be found, which made things more difficult. The lack of a mentor, even from my parents meant that I would have to figure out things on my own. It was challenging because the course at times was difficult, and having a mentor would have eased things. Nonetheless, I was fortunate to be part of a group of five very supportive students. My group members helped and encouraged me, particularly in the difficult moments of the course. The students filled in the void of that mentor I wanted so badly. If given a chance, I would do things differently.
Instead of depending on my parents for mentorship and support, I would look for a mentor. I would look for someone who pursued nursing and is thriving in their career. In doing so, I would learn from their journey, follow in their footsteps towards becoming a better nursing professional in the future. From this challenge, I learned that support is a crucial aspect of a nursing student's life. Without the support and mentorship, it is easy to give up. At times, the people we expect to have our backs, such as our parents, do not offer the necessary support simply because they expected a different career choice from the one, we are pursuing. The challenge has inspired me to become more available to mentor other students. I am suitable for the role of a mentor because I have experienced how the lack of one can affect a student's life.
