My reason for choosing nursing as a career is because I believe my desire to help people through nursing is a calling and I feel compelled to help those in need. Nursing should not be seen as a job to get a paycheck because it is a noble career (America Nurses Association, 2005). My primary goal is to provide non-judgmental care to those in need regardless of their choice of lifestyle, spiritual beliefs, race, disability and financial status.

My belief is that nurses have a responsibility to provide holistic, safe and patient centered care to the public. I must recall that my patients are not medical conditions or numbers. Chitty & Black (2007) argue that they are persons deserving individual care and attention. As a nurse, I should use clinical judgment to meet the patient’s needs. I should maintain the confidentiality of the patients except when am instructed to report. I must educate patients with their families regarding treatment, diseases and healthy behaviors for better results. My life should exemplify positive behaviors to provide good care to others if I care for myself first.

These values and beliefs guide me in making my personal decisions in life. I believe that caring, integrity and knowledge are the basic of nursing. I should focus on the needs of the patients, their safety, healing and empowerment. My personal and professional values correspond because the objective of nursing is met by my personal values. I must live out my philosophies daily. Whenever I involve myself in improper situations, I need to asses it and learn from it.

There is the need to be better nurse tomorrow than I was yesterday. One needs to monitor their actions to confirm that they are on track with the nursing practices. Personal and ethical standards need to be upheld all the times. As a nurse, I should be accountable of my actions. My positive view of life, the ability to help patients and enthusiasm are among the important contributions to life. I hope to be a leader and mentor in future so as to be able to inspire others in improving the quality of healthcare (Wu, 2008).
