Since the year 1794, Native American tribes and the United States of America have been negotiating treaties for what seems like countless decades. The treaties mainly revolved around negotiating borders and conditions established by the United States. Over 307 treaties that have expanded the United States territory and violated native Americans’ sovereignty, and promoting self-determination have been signed. Because of broken promises, native Americans established a civil right movement to enforce broken treaties by the United States government. Their civil rights movement involved the occupation of essential sites known as Alcatraz, Mount Rushmore, and the Bureau of Indian affairs.
The occupation of Alcatraz island took place from November 20, 1969, to June 11, 1971. The occupation lasted 19 months and ended when federal Marshals intervened to remove the last native American. The Mount Rushmore occupation took place in 1970. Over 23 Native Americans took over the mountain to protest land that the United States had granted them and then took control of the Sioux tribe. The Bureau of Indian occupation took place in November 1972. Young Native Americans took over the Bureau of Indian office to stage their protest.

It is essential to learn how Native Americans' land was taken and how treaties were manipulated to benefit America. It is also crucial to understand the occupations' outcomes and how Native Americans have kept the civil rights movement going.
In conclusion, my research will consist of how Native Americans fought for sovereignty and self-determination by occupying sites over the years, fighting for the violation of treaties sign by both parties. I will also provide research on the outcome of the occupied areas and what has changed over the years. I have taken several classes on history, but the history of Native Americans has always intrigued me.
