The plot entirely describes how basically the three characters, Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy spent their childhood times together from school up to their adulthood. The three are products of clones who are destined to be carers of other human beings. They are thus mandated to provide organs to those that they are dictated to do so. However the above is not of much concern in the book as it focuses on the past lives of the three characters while they were still in school. The teachers in the school that the three underwent their education manipulated them to remain in the course of a conservative life with little exposure that they perceived certain acts such as smoking to be a taboo in the societies that they dwelled in later after.

The plot of the book shows that the childhood life of individuals is to a greater extent a determinant of the future adult life that people are to live besides their interaction with others. The confinement in the boarding school that the three characters had, led to their little exposure in the immediate outside life that surrounded their school life. The teachers disclosed minimal information of what was to be later their course of life which somehow impacted negatively to their form of life. Curiosity led to Kathy indulging in weird behavior that later came to affect her relationship with the other friends. Due to less exposure also, the three face a problem expanding their friendship circle in the sense that they can absorb other friends and end up becoming intimate among themselves. We see one Kathy replacing Ruth’s position in Tommy’s life without difficulties.
