The title of the article I have chosen is New Catholic sex abuse allegations show how long justice can take in a 16-year scandal. The article is authored by Tara Isabella Burton. In summary, the article is about the Catholic Church and the many sex scandals which have lately brought the crisis in the church. The Catholic Church has found itself in the center of crisis with several new reports sharing in details the extent of sex abuse allegations on children committed by the clergy. According to a report released by the Pennsylvania grand jury, there are more than 1000 victims that were sexually abused by 300 Catholic priests. The outcry of the public and civil societies is on the clerical culture of turning a deaf ear to the victims and instead of punishing the abusers, the church quietly reshuffles the priests to the new diocese where they get new victims.
The many allegations have alluded to the culture of secrecy in the Catholic Church and the failure of church officials to own up and uncover these offenses. The Vatican on their side has termed the allegations as morally reprehensible and criminal acts which have robbed survivors of their faith and dignity. Pope Francis has issued a personal apology on behalf of the church and said that the church has failed to care for the little ones. According to the pope, the church has to learn from the past and should be accountable for both the abusers and those who allowed or permitted the offenses to occur. The new policy has since been established that require the members of the clergy to turn over sexual abuse reports to the police indicating the extent of abuse. Connecting the offenses and ethics of sexual fantasy, I argue that an individual's sexual fantasies rely on the person's desires, intentions, and beliefs. I attribute the sexual offenses in the church to different forms of intentionality. The sexual contents of these offenses in my view fail to express satisfaction conditions. While one may argue that the clergy is not different from any other human who may be dealing with temptations, I argue that human choices should be in line with what they believe and the position they occupy in the society. It is time that the Catholic Church should not only admit to the sexual offenses sinking the church down but should change the system of dealing with these offenses. The title of the second article I have chosen is Dying daughter left without pain medication as mom took the meds for herself, police say. The article is authored by Joel Shannon. In summary, the article is about a Missouri woman who failed to give her dying daughter painkillers and instead took the medications herself. Carol Ballweg, aged 46 was charged with four felony counts of stealing medications and two counts of abusing a vulnerable person. The staff also raised concerns about the woman who was the primary caregiver of her daughter. The staff said that Ballweg had a history of requesting her daughter's medicine to be filled sooner than usual. When a test was conducted on Ballweg however, there were no traces of urine found in her urine. When the police conducted a search in the home of Ballweg, she admitted that she had an opioid addiction and that is why she took her daughter's oxycodone medication and used it herself. She was given a bond of 100, 000 dollars cash with a condition that she does not get in contact with the victim.
This article raises an ethical dilemma in which a mother who is supposed to be careful of her daughter uses her medicine. The mother cites addiction and gives a justification of why she used the medication. Ethically, humans and most especially parents should not subject their children to any form of pain or trouble. The mother is ethically and morally wrong to leave her daughter with pain while she should be taking care of her. The article can be retrieved from the link below.
