The decision to put up a new structure or to refurbish an existing one depends on the different variables. Though not an easy decision to make, there are key elements used in both processes that can assist an individual in making that key decision. Both options have their merits and demerits, meaning that the choice one makes is the one that will serve the bigger picture. By comparing variables like cots, requirements as well as the intended use, the decision is clearer ( Kraia, 2015). This essay will, therefore, look into some of the things that should be considered when evaluating whether to renovate an existing facility or build a new one and why.

Renovating can at times be sustainable up front and cost-effective. However, it might not be a better choice when weighed against other variables and long-term goals. Location is one point that one should consider. This is because renovating a building in a place where there is no economic growth would not make any business sense. Instead of renovating, one can put up a new building in a place that will generate a return on their investment.

Existing technology is another factor that ought to be considered. Technology changes every day and therefore one needs to keep abreast, otherwise, they risk being left behind on technology accessibility. Older buildings often do not have the capacity for modern technology, especially the electrical systems (Acre & Wyckmans, 2014) . Putting up a new building would be advantageous because there is the ability to fit in an electric system that the user has in mind. In addition, the building’s structural integrity and history is also another factor that should be considered. The history of the building will foretell if it will remain standing for a long time ( Kraia, 2015) . However, there are buildings that have sentimental value, and therefore it is vital to consider this variable before making the final decision.

In summary, there is no better choice, as all the decisions depend on the variables and circumstances. Choosing to renovate or to build a new one will have diverse challenges, and the above variables can be used as a guide on choosing the best solution.
