Elie teaches us a lot about perseverance, faith, and forgiveness looking at the life that he leads. Concerning faith, he is described as a person who has a lot of faith in God at the start of the book. In his Kabbalah classes, Moishe teaches him that the only way to be close to God is by questioning him and asking him questions related to some of the things that were happening. This means that despite the instances when it looks like that he does not have faith, he gets closer to God by questioning him. This can be seen when he experiences life at the camps. On forgiveness, only God can forgive and not a human being. In general, Elie is trying to forgive himself for what had happened to him, but he cannot do it. When things go wrong, the only thing that one should do is ask God for forgiveness to those who do wrong. Perseverance comes with determination and Elie is not short of this throughout the book. His life with his father shows a lot of perseverance especially after he had a knee surgery. Walking was a problem, but he persevered even when his father was ill.
