Think about your appearance (artifacts, dress, body type, attractiveness). What messages do you think these nonverbal codes say about you to a complete stranger?

Artifacts are either personal, public or shared. The artifacts are also called objectics. For instance, an individual could use their personal space to take advantage of what a stranger sees. They can use the objects in conveying a message of either deception or a thought to the stranger they are what they are not. Moreover, when a stranger walks closely or from afar could see honesty in the person. Artifacts provide knowledge to the stranger on an individual’s marital status- when they wear a wedding ring, personality, culture-like a turban for Sikhs and social status. Secondly, dress type conveys a message to the stranger about their situation. The dress type worn official sends a different message from a casual or a conservative dress type. Moreover, an individual's body type convey a message to a stranger whether masculine or feminine. Nonetheless, attractiveness makes a stranger see you as full of confidence and higher self-esteem.

How do we try to shape the way others see us by these nonverbal codes (clothes, jewelry, makeup, tattoos, etc.)?

Firstly, we try to shape the way others see us by wearing fashionable clothing. Smart-looking and ironed clothes shape our social status and personality. For instance, when a patient realizes that the doctor or physician is not donned in the typical attire, they would feel insecure and see the person as untrustworthy. Secondly, the type of jewelry one wears represents their social status. Cheaper jewelry shows a low social status while an expensive one shows a high-profile status. The social status and personality are also evident on the type of makeup and how one looks regarding their beauty. A well-applied makeup shows a respectable and a high-profile person when a stranger sees them compared to one that has applied poorly or has cheaper makeup on them. Nonetheless, a stranger sees one who has a tattoo on them as an immoral or unkempt person when it is put all over the body. On the other hand, a single tattoo could make a stranger view that as nostalgic.
