This reading was very educational to me. For a long time, I have assumed that my nonverbal encoding and decoding competence was unusual. After analyzing the text and appraising myself, I am happy I can identify my strengths and weaknesses as it will be discussed. The takeaway from the reading will be helpful in my future life since I will cultivate my nonverbal communication competence.

Some of my notable nonverbal encoding strengths include eye contact, and paralanguage and receptivity. For eye contact, this one of my greatest strengths because I have a habit to dodge eye contact with new individuals and gaze unduly at persons, and not making eye contact at the time of the talk, and stare at the skies while being addressed. On paralanguage, the score is high since my skills and capabilities are brilliant when it comes to understanding what to state, how to state, when to state, and who to state it too.

On the other hand, one of my nonverbal decoding strengths is that I am a brilliant receptor. The receptivity strength affirms that I am excellent at analyzing the feelings and plans of other people and I am always conversant with issues that happen around me.

Some of my nonverbal encoding weaknesses include the use of time and the use of gestures. For the use of time, the score tends to be low since I have a habit of not caring for being late, but being concerned about leaving early especially when a meeting is not that crucial. The use of gestures is low since I tend to put my hands on my back while addressing people.

In contrast, my nonverbal decoding weaknesses are conversational skills and facial expressions. My score on conversational skills tend to be low since when I am enthusiastic about a discussion, a have a habit not to be patient until they complete their sentence, I often cut them off and also employ excessive non-contributing phrases. On facial expression, the score is low since I tend to overstate it and my normal facial expression is undesirable.

In conclusion, the above nonverbal encoding and decoding strengths have a positive effect on my general communication competence. On the other hand, identifying my weaknesses provides a good opportunity for me to improve them and enhance my nonverbal communication competence.
