For nurses and midwives, the concept of spirituality may appear to be somewhat complex and abstract and as a consequence spirituality care is hardly integrated into the nursing practice. This article describes a descriptive study that was conducted in order to establish the perception of midwives and nurses on the concept of spirituality and spiritual care.

Under the holistic approach to healthcare delivery, a person is a whole with spiritual, socio-cultural, emotional, mental and physical dimensions and all of these dimensions are interconnected and codependent on one other. Notwithstanding, the concept of spirituality as an aspect of holistic approach has been comprehended and employed differently and this may be attributed to the elusiveness of the concept. In order to determine the opinion of caregivers on the concept of spirituality, a study was conducted. The study sample for this experiment was 243 midwives and nurses who worked at the Health Practice and Research Center of a University within Turkey. Data necessary for the study was collected from the spiritual and spiritually care rating scale and personal information form.

From the study over 28.8 percent of midwives and nurses had received prior information regarding spiritual care while 46.5 percent had offered spiritual care to their patients. The study revealed that nurses who got information concerning spiritual care had a higher perception of spiritual care. From the findings, it is evident that nurses and midwives lacked adequate knowledge of spiritual care and nurses who had information regarding spiritual care had a higher regard for spiritual care. Spiritual care must be integrated into the midwifery and nursing curriculum in order to ensure they get adequate information about spiritual care.

Critique of Article

I believe it would have been Important for the article to start of the introduction by defining spiritual care and this helps novice readers better grapple with the topic at before going into the study. Nonetheless, the author has great delivery and is straight to the point. This is significant because it offers clarity on the purpose of the article. In addition to this, the article is extensive and elaborates on various aspects of the spirituality and how he studies will determine spirituality. For example, Kostak & Celikkalp (2016), state that psychological and physical needs are more intangible, more complex and difficult to measure, this explanation was necessary for understanding why some midwives and nurses do not apply the spiritual approach to health care delivery. I believe the page layout should have been as a block rather than splitting the paper into two. This would have made it easier to follow the study.

The documentation, however, used the excellent methodology in obtaining data needed for the analysis. Data analysis itself employed statistical formulas such as the normal distribution using the Kolmogorov–Smimov test which helped draw the right inferences. The results obtained from the experiment conform to the initial objective of the test.it was also necessary to include ethical permission in order to describe ethical wants surrounding the study and discussion and conclusion to further discuss findings of the study.

Application of Article

The article highlights the issue that nurses and midwives had not received adequate information regarding spiritual care. It was evident that Nurses or midwives who are administrators of patient care are in apposition to advance and execute spiritual care within their nursing practice through educational techniques. In order to ensure that nurses and midwives are in the loop with regards to spiritual care, it is necessary to initiate training programs that ought to contain spiritual values and must focus on patient care.
