During Maria’ assessment, I would love to do a further assessment of her diet to determine what she eats on a 24-hour basis and how she prepares the food she takes. In addition, I would love to know whether she performs any fitness activity and if she has any fitness plan that she follows. Without a fitness plan, I would inquire if she desires to take part in any physical activity. Also, I would inquire about her family support system, given that she seems to have too much on her hands. Additionally, it would be important to access the familial risk factors for obesity, hypertension and other lifestyle diseases. An assessment of the familial history will put her risk level in perspective and may inspire behavior change. According to her blood pressure, Maria has stage 1 hypertension, making it necessary to know if she is at risk for other lifestyle diseases.
Some of the health concerns and risk factors I identified include: sleep deprivation with long working hours, a growing dependency on caffeine and chronic lack of rest. Her risk factors include: her Latino heritage which predisposes her to vascular diseases, a sedentary lifestyle and poor feeding habits (Weber &Kelley, 2013). These problems seem to predispose Maria to lifestyle diseases and worsening mental health. The opportunities to promote health for Maria would be that she has acknowledged the fact that her weight gain may be detrimental to her health and appearance. Hence, this shows a readiness for her to change. Also, her knowledge of medicine as a nurse forms a good background for understanding her risk factors and the need to adjust her lifestyle (Edington et al., 2015). Taking advantage of her knowledge base and the opportunities, I am better placed at discussing with Maria about ways to adjust her lifestyle to better her health and wellness. I would diagnose Maria as having hypertension related to a stressful and sedentary lifestyle and Latino heritage as manifested by high blood pressure (148/90) and a stressful schedule with minimal rest and poor eating habits.
