The nursing code of ethics describes the obligations, duties, professional values, and professional ideals of a nurse. All nine provisions are very crucial in protecting and establishing the well-being of patients (Chadwick & Gallagher, 2016). Personally, as a nurse, I will take the provision that states: “The nurses should practice with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and unique attributes of every person” (Butts & Rich, 2019). This tenant guides me as a nurse to feel kindhearted to all people, respect my patients, and treat them with dignity. Additionally, I should ensure the privacy of my patients by excusing myself before entering their rooms, introducing myself to them, and explaining to them what I intend to do. Furthermore, I should consult the patients on whether they are comfortable discussing their health issues when some family members are present. Also, I will follow the principle and give my patients the power to make decisions (Kangasniemi, Pakkanen & Korhonen, 2015). Showing respect to my patients also means that I should allow them to make informed decisions regarding the type of care that they can receive.

I will also proudly apply the provision that states, “The nurse promotes, advocates for, protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient” (Butts & Rich, 2019). I have advocated for my patients on several occasions. My role as a nurse is to advocate and ensure the voice of the patient is heard. In this regard, I am supposed to advocate for the patient’s right at the community level, organizational level, and national level. Some of the advocacy issues include the promotion of best practice guidelines to ensure that they receive affordable and high-quality care. Also, I will educate the patients and protect their self-autonomy rights. Self-autonomy ensures that if a patient is capable of making decisions, they should not be coerced to choose what they do not want.

When a nurse upholds the provisions of the nursing code of ethics, it shows their deep commitment towards proper patient care. Also, the provisions help nurses in solving challenges that arise in their daily activities for better healthcare (Epstein & Turner, 2015). Lastly, honoring the provisions will build my career. In this case, if I adhere to the guidelines, I am less likely to break the law, thus ensuring that I enjoy a successful career.
