Nurses contribute a critical role in the successful delivery of safe healthcare to patients. The nursing profession's versatility virtually ensures that any health facility's operational status anchors on competent service delivery through leadership. In her book, " Nursing Leadership and Management ," Elizabeth Murray focuses on how nursing ensures the delivery of safe and quality healthcare to patients. Among the principles and professional competence in nursing leadership raised by Murray, include mentorship, contribution to a supportive environment, effective communication, accountability in the delegation, and influencing policy to promote better healthcare (Murray, 2017). The principles mentioned above transcend from the various leadership styles and theories that are employed diversely by different leaders in their capacities.

Mentorship refers to the need for ensuring that there exists a consistent apprenticeship program within any organization. Nurse Managers have to show faith and allow younger practitioners to grow into future roles through training programs. It would be appropriate, as a nurse manager, to recognize and grant opportunities for training arrangements between healthcare institutions and learning institutions. Further, ensure that graduate nurses are attached to experienced mentors within the health facility.

Health facilities are high-stress work environments. Therefore, it is incumbent on nurse managers to ensure that they create an environment conducive to all staff members. Murray (2017) emphasizes that, as a leader in the health facility, nurse managers have the responsibility of checking on staff wellness through promoting respect, trust, as well as dignity among staffers.

The diversity in roles and specialization among nurses requires an active communication channel. The purpose of nurse managers is to ensure a recognizable communication hierarchy and chain of command. Hence, nurse leaders have the responsibility of managing communication between staff and departments and resolving conflicting issues.

Leadership thrives on the delegation of roles. According to Murray (2017) it is imperative that managers remain accountable in the event they delegate any of their positions. However, nurse managers must take a supervisory role in any commissioned work and be responsible for such work.

Nurse Managers' role as custodians of authority among their peers is to advocate for batter policies that guarantee the sustenance of safe and quality healthcare. Therefore, nurse managers and leaders in any capacity can influence healthcare policies in respective areas of practice. Nurse leaders have to take the advocacy role as a crucial one and present proposals where applicable for change.
