Among the many nursing need-based theories, the case study presented in the interactive journal article demonstrates the application of Betty Neuman’s systems model and Dorothea Orem’s self-care and theories in nursing practice (Smith & Parker, 2015). Therefore I was able to integrate my prior theoretical knowledge into the interactive practical experience in the case study.
In my view, the application of Orem and Neuman’s theories in the case study is similar to existing literary theoretical explanations. Dorothy Orem’s general theory incorporates the self-care, self-care deficit and the nursing systems theories (Smith & Parker, 2015) . In this case, Mr Duran’s limited vision creates self-care deficit and thus he requires the help of his wife to administer insulin. Besides the agency and demand for therapeutic self-care entails the provision of universal, developmental and health related self-care requisites.

The Neuman’s systems model highlights the role of external and internal stressors as potential threats holistic wellbeing. Similarly, the case study highlights stress as a substantial factor in the management of patients like Mr Duran.
Nursing theories presents the extensive scope of knowledge that is applied in the nursing practice. Orem’s theory identifies nursing system as essential in providing guidelines for nurses to implement care plans and guiding patients towards the importance of self. In the case study, the assessment of the Mr Duran by the nurse educator administers is a significant initial step in patient management.
Also, the Neuman’s systems model coincides with the nursing goal of providing holistic care to care to patients (Lowry & Aylward, 2015). As indicated in the case study, stress affects the psychological wellbeing. Identifying such potential environmental stressors facilitates the implementation of primary, secondary and tertiary nursing interventions that supports the holistic wellbeing of patients.
Therefore, the need-based theories provide a framework that aids in the synthesis and conceptualization of phenomena at specific levels such as primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care in nursing.
