Spirituality is a professional responsibility and a part of holistic nursing. The issue of immigration has increased religions and spiritual sects globally. Spirituality encompasses many alternative therapies along with more orthodox ritual practices. This essay involves conducting an internet search to find an article addressing alternative therapy to spiritual distress. The article identified is a research paper by Simão, Caldeira and de Carvalho (2016). The researchers aimed at exploring the contribution of prayer to disease or health process and promotion of integration of prayers in holistic healthcare assistance.
The authors of the article recognized the increasing interest regarding prayer in nursing practice. The study was conducted to investigate the effects of using prayer on patient’s health. The authors conducted a systematic literature review, where they identified 92 papers and included 12 of them. The researchers identified that seven studies considered prayer as a positive factor and they also identified a wide range of positive impacts of prayer on health. Some of the positive impacts include anxiety reduction in mothers of children with cancer, improving physical functioning in patients believing in the power of prayer and reducing levels of concern of individuals believing prayer will solve their problems. The study concluded that prayer should be incorporated in the holistic nursing care as an intervention to improve the well-being of patients.

In my opinion, prayer therapy will enhance the spirituality of my patients. Similar to other caring procedures and activities, prayer can improve a patient's well-being and enhance the quality of spiritual life. According to Zehtab and Adib-Hajbaghery (2014), spiritual care improves a person’s stress responses, a sense of excellence and integrity, and interpersonal relationships. Prayer acts as a means of resort for deliverance from entanglements, troubles, and hopelessness. I believe prayer plays an important role in the decrease or prevention of physical, mental, and emotional problems.
