The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recognizes that the United States is experiencing an upsurge in nursing shortage and this is predicted to get worse in the coming years. The country is gradually experiencing the growing demand for health care as the elderly population increases but it has not managed to increase nursing capacity to address this growing demand (AACN, n.d.). I would ensure the adequate supply of nurses through the implementation attractive remunerations for these professionals. It is a highly tasking profession which requires sufficient compensation. Increased pay, which matches the demand of this line of work would attract more individuals into nursing education and gradually help increase the number of professionals getting into the working environment every year. I would also re-integrate the retired nurses into services. Since they retire at 62 years, I believe they can still serve 3 more years until they are 65. This would help increase the period in which the professionals provide care and contribute immensely to reducing the current shortage.
Short-term actions would be to ensure that those who are retiring soon are given three more years to serve and those who may have retired in the last year are recruited for service provision. Even is they would serve for a year or two until they are 65, their presence would have reduced nursing shortage to a great extent. The long-term actions would be working on attractive compensation for nurses. The compensation would be an increase in their salary, better bonuses and other attractive packages. Such a move would take the involvement of the necessary stakeholders and may take some time to implement. Nonetheless, it would be effective once implemented as potential registered nurse would be attracted by the good pay.
