The evidence-based practice project selected was about the nursing shortage in my workplace. The project aims at examining the effects of the nursing shortage in a medical facility on patient safety. The study will be quantitative the relationship between the dependent and the independent variable will be analyzed statistically ( Kalisch, Lee, & Rochman, 2010) . The correlation model will be developed whereby the dependent variables which include the number of patients who are unable to get services due to shortage of nurses and the average length of stay. This will be collated with the independent variable which is the number of the nurses deployed in a medical facility.
The length of stay is selected as a dependent variable because the number of nurses in a facility has a relationship with the amount of time a person can spend in the hospital receiving treatment. When the ration of the nurses to the patients is correct, each patient has access to quality and timely nursing care. Hence the length of stay is likely to decrease ( Rosseter, 2014) . The control group in this project will be the benchmark where adequate nurse to patient ration will be employed compared to the case group where there is the inadequate nurse to patient ration.

In summary, it is critical to define independent and dependent variables for any quantitative research studies. In this project, the dependent and independent variables are defined, and the research will seek to develop the relationship between them ( Lee, 2016) . The number of nurses deployed in a medical facility was chosen to be the independent variable because it is a standalone variable. The length of stay in hospital was selected as the dependent variable since the number of days a patient stays in the hospital is associated with the quality of care they receive which is determined by the number of nurses available.
