This paper aims to examine both counseling and nursing theories that govern my nursing practice and develop goals and objectives for the practicum experience.
Nursing theory
The theory of Interpersonal Relations is the nursing theory chosen to guide my practice in psychotherapy. In psychotherapy, the base of treatment depends on the excellent relationship created between patients and PMHNP. The PMHNP must also build trust among the clients for the treatment to be effective. The theory of Interpersonal Relations has four phases of professional and client relationships. These phases include orientation, exploitation, identification, and resolution ( Hagerty et al., 2017 ). During the orientation phase, the patient elaborates on their problem, and the healthcare professional completes the initial examination.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
Health professionals need to gain patient trust to make them comfortable enough to be appropriately treated. For instance, if the patient has a sexual abuse history and does not share it with the PMHNP, they m receiving the treatment they do not expect. I have worked with several patients find who it challenging to disclose childhood trauma until they feel comfortable enough to do it. In the identification phase, the plan is developed. During this time, the patient develops a sense of belonging, and the mental health professional can fix the problem ( Deane & Fain, 2016 ). In the exploitation phase, the nursing plan is executed, and actions are taken to meet the set goals. Resolution is the last phase of Peplau’s theory. In this phase, the mental health professional terminates his or her relationship with the patient because they have met all patients’ needs. I chose this theory because it enables a healthcare professional to develop a strong relationship with patients.
Behavioral Theory
The theory states that people’s behaviors from the environment and the individuals around them. I consider the behavioral approach appropriate because it allows us to concentrate on the clients' current problematic behaviors. The theory examines observable behaviors, unlike other psychoanalytic that focuses on emotions ( Nason, Bacq, & Gras, 2018 ). I chose this theory because it will help me work with children with mental health conditions that may result in behavioral problems such as ADHD and autism. Behavioral analysis is currently utilized as a therapeutic method to aid children diagnosed with ASD to reduce negative behaviors that influence learning and heighten positive and helpful actions.
Psychotherapy goals with groups and families
The first goal of the course is to learn to document a group therapy session properly. During my time as a psychiatric nurse, I have never recorded a group therapy session. I will take this opportunity to learn the documentation process while in the course. The second goal in this course is to understand the state laws and regulations about group therapy. As much as there are numerous legal and ethical considerations when carrying out group therapy, I need to be aware of the rules to protect myself and the clients I work with. The third goal in this course is to build confidence in managing a group therapy session. Even though I have conducted numerous therapies and assessments with different individuals, I have never done it with multiple people. I will use this course to build my confidence in this area.
Psychotherapy objectives with groups
To offer precise psychiatric diagnoses for clients during practicum upon course completion
To recall significant legal and ethical implications of Florida State when offering psychotherapy to families and various groups
To complete at least five assessments with new clients during practicum experience and develop a care plan with clients.
Course timeline
I will complete a total of 10 weeks of clinical in this course. I will work with my preceptor for a minimum of three days per week for at least five hours a day. In the first two weeks, I will acquaint myself with the preceptor and the practicum site. I will also get set up with the computer systems that my preceptor uses. In the third week, I will make sure that I can adequately chart the therapy sessions I have completed. Between the fourth and fifth weeks, I will make sure that I am comfortable with the documentation process. Between the third and sixth weeks, I will also be treating patients with preceptor's until I am satisfied to do it independently. In week seven to ten, I plan on practicing alone. After each practice session, I will wait for the preceptor’s feedback to be aware of specific areas that I can improve. By the end of the session, I want to be confident in providing psychotherapy to groups.
