Latin America has formed an essential part of my past schooling. I have appreciated several social, political, and economic factors especially surrounding the region. Most significantly, the study of the instability in Latin America characterized by oppression and exploitation of the citizens by the political class as witnessed in countries such as Venezuela. Also, the studies have also centered on the input of Christopher Columbus, his discovery of the Americas and the influence he had on the displacement of the native Latin American people. The learning experience was eye-opening and provided me with various facets to understand the history of Latin America.
Galeano’s presentation of Latin America offers immense knowledge about the history, socioeconomic, and political dynamics about the region. Historically, I learned how the quest for minerals such as gold and silver and sugarcane fueled the conquest of Latin America. The voyages by Columbus had a significant role in opening the region and exposing it to potential suitors who would go on to colonize the area and deny it an opportunity to exploit the vast amount of resources it had. One of the factors that I met on across the pages of the book was the vastness of petroleum products in Latin America and the history of America in exploiting it. It is an aspect I would want to know more about.

However, historians have opined that the crops have also contributed to antisocial aspects such as slavery, forced labor, exploitation, and disregard to animal welfare. Therefore, it calls upon further research to assess how the value of the crops in the region and the impact they had on the degradation of humanity.
