The story of the death of Ivan ILych is saddening. From the beginning of the story, Ivan's wife Praskovya seems so selfish and thinks how his suffering impacted on her. I think Ivan’s wife and daughter are to blame for some occasions. When Ivan is suffering, his wife and daughter do not show him sympathy. Ivan is forced to hire Gerasim as his nurse. I think Ivan’s wife was acting according to her superficiality. I believe that she was inhuman sometimes to the extent that she could not care for her ailing husband. On the other hand, Ivan was acting according to social codes but never reflected on them. For instance, he decided to leave when his wife was pregnant to create peace from the emerging hatred, which later turned out to the opposite.
I think people should be blamed if everything in the society tells them that they should pursue better jobs and superficial marks of success. As an individual, the primary goal of living is to be comfortable and happy. If a person is satisfied with a lower job which meets his/her needs, then there is no need to look for better jobs to please the society. To correct this in the society, people should understand that the society consists of unequal individuals. These individuals have different motives, and goals and the society have no mandate to dictate their destiny.
