Hello, people often understand nursing in different ways depending on what they see nurses do in their day to day activities and depending on the assumptions which they make. For this reason, I am going to discuss my personal definition of nursing.
In simple terms, I believe that nursing is a profession that mainly involves the provision of care to those who are sick. The meaning of nursing has not changed through my career; however, there has been an improvement in the provision of care. A good example is the fact that the spread in the use of the internet and the social media means that more people who need care can be reached without having to visit a hospital. According to McCalla (2013), the use of the internet also provides an opportunity for nurses in the future because much more will be encouraged to engage in research on how to improve the health of people.

My personal philosophy in nursing is based on that of Florence Nightingale of meeting the needs of the patients and providing the best condition that enhances the healing process. The qualities that are expected from a nurse include attention to detail, empathy, problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, emotional stability, and physical endurance.
The current theories that I incorporate in my nursing practice include the need theory by Virginia Henderson, which concentrated on the independence of the patient to ensure that they continue healing after they are discharged from the hospital (Fitzpatrick, 2014). The second theory is the self-care theory by Dorothea E. Orem, which emphasizes on giving patient of potential health risk so that they can be responsible for their care and of those around them. The third theory is the system model by Betty Neuman that aims at preventing any stressors that can affect a patient. The fourth theory is the interpersonal theory by Hildegard Peplau that mainly emphasizes on interpersonal relationships with patients, especially those with psychological problems. The next theory is the transcultural nursing by Madeleine Leininger that emphasizes the need to provide care while considering the values and culture of the patient. Finally, I incorporate “from novice to expert” by Patricia Benner because the experience that I am gaining in my career is making me an expert (Smith, 2015).
Evidently, nursing is a vital part of the health care system that involves various aspects of prevention of illness and caring for those who are ill. It also aims at promoting health by means of providing preventive health care to people who are well, a good example of preventative health is standard immunization for children.
